Shakuntala Devi‐ Review of the Movie (Spoiler alert!!!)

Hello everybody!!

Harshith here!!

I know that during these troubling times, it is very difficult to go to the movies, buy a pack of popcorn, and enjoy your favourite films when they are released. I know many of you feel like that. Me too :(

But one day, I came across this movie called Shakuntala Devi = The Human Computer

Starring Vidya Balan(Shakuntala Devi ), Sanya Malhotra (Anupama Banerji), Jisshu Sengupta (Paritosh banerji) and Amit Sadh (Ajay Abhay Kumar) in leading roles, Shakuntala Devi is a movie which is more realistic than mathematical. Before watching this movie, I had no idea that there was actually a person like this.

This movie got me thinking a lot about this young child prodigy. Imagine if you were in high school and you were terrible at solving problems which were about finding the root of the number. And you had a girl like Shakuntala Devi next to you who could say the answer just by looking at the numbers. BIZARRE... right?

Well this movie not only focuses on Shakuntala Devi as a woman with a successful career, but also shows her life from her young age in which she started doing maths shows to when she started leading a happy life with her daughter and granddaughter. In the middle they catch up with little transitions which in my opinion was wonderful acting by Vidya Balan. The transitions mainly focus on the different times ( Both good and bad of course) which is the best part. Because, most biopics don't go and immerse the characters into the whole story but in this case, Vidya Balan (Shakuntala Devi ) has definitely immersed herself and put her soul into becoming Shakuntala Devi. This movie doesn't focus much on making the characters look exactly like the person in real life.

For instance: Take Vidya Balan and Shakuntala Devi:

This is the real Shakuntala Devi And here is Vidya Balan ( As Shakuntala Devi

though)

After watching the movie I looked up on Vidya Balan's other movies. I could see that she has that unique skill of becoming one with the story, one with the character and one with fellow cast members. You see, this is the real deal. This isn't... you know 3\4 biopic and 1/4 fiction.

It is fully fiction... (Just kidding :) ) Well even though there might be some fiction in it, it gives you the 'whole scoop' on Shakuntala Devi's life.

Moving on, the next part is going to be the songs. There are some good songs like 'Rani Hindustani', 'Pass Nahi toh Fail Nahi' My favorite is Rani Hindustani by Sunidhi Chauhan Sachin - Jigar ,Vayu. There are many other good songs in this movie.

Next is the expressions. The real Shakuntala Devi has this different and unique expression which she uses when she solves a maths problem.

She completes by saying the last digit of the answer and asks "Am I correct?"

(Personally, that was intimidating to me) But those reactions were captured beautifully by Vidya Balan.

The story goes on to the point where Shakuntala Devi and her daughter fight. Then her daughter leaves the house. Soon after Anupama's daughter Amritha is born and after Shakuntala Devi files a case against her daughter. They both become reunited and the movie ends there.

Even though some characters have very low mentions and very low scenes to play, each actor has given their best and portrayed their characters beautifully. Shakuntala Devi is a movie to be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike. And I am sure that after watching this movie you will see maths in a different way. I also feel like the concept is somehow like the movie and story of SUPER 30.
